In October, Dr. Edna Adan Ismail, the founder of Edna Adan University and one of Africa’s most influential women leaders, spent two inspiring weeks in the United Kingdom, participating in a series of events that highlighted her lifelong commitment to education, healthcare, and women’s empowerment.
Her journey began at the Global Girl Leading Summit, where she joined global advocates to celebrate the International Day of the Girl. As a guest speaker, Dr. Edna shared her powerful message on the importance of investing in girls’ education and leadership, inspiring young women to take bold steps toward shaping a more equitable world.

Following the summit, Dr. Edna attended the UK Women of the Year Celebration, an event that honors outstanding women who are transforming their communities and making a global impact. Her presence among this distinguished group of changemakers underscored her decades-long dedication to improving maternal health and advancing opportunities for women in Somaliland and beyond.

Dr. Edna’s visit continued with a lecture at Warwick College, where she addressed medical professionals and students, sharing insights from her vast experience in healthcare leadership and her pioneering work in establishing one of the first modern maternity hospitals in Somaliland.
Her UK tour concluded in Birmingham, where she met with the Vice Chancellor of Aston University to explore potential academic collaborations, and later delivered an inspiring presentation at The King’s Trust, reflecting on her journey, challenges, and the power of education in transforming lives.
Dr. Edna’s two-week visit to the UK was a remarkable testament to her enduring leadership, compassion, and vision. Through every event and encounter, she continued to embody her lifelong mission — empowering women, advancing education, and building a healthier, more equitable future for all.
