Nearly 450 health workers trained in breast cancer early detection

Health workers gather around a breast examination model during the training

At Edna Adan University & Hospital, we see firsthand the urgent need for specialized oncology awareness across our health system. In Somaliland, breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among women, yet limited diagnostic capacity means far too many cases are identified at advanced stages.

Because African women frequently develop breast cancer at a significantly younger age, often in their 30s, early detection is crucial to saving lives and keeping families together.

To address this challenge, an intensive two-week training program was led by Dr. Biku Ghosh, alongside Dr. Shukri, dedicated translators, and the Edna Adan Hospital team. Together, we trained nearly 450 healthcare personnel and community leaders, including 350 village health center workers, alongside doctors, nurses, and midwives from across Hargeisa. The training focused on clinical screening methods and teaching routine breast self-examinations starting at age 20.

By strengthening clinical expertise and community-level screening, Edna Adan University & Hospital continues to lead the way in proactive healthcare and maternal welfare across Somaliland.
