Strengthening Maternal Care: Edna Adan University Hosts Seminar on Obstetric Emergencies

In a joint effort to advance maternal and newborn health, Edna Adan University, in collaboration with the Somaliland Ministry of Health and Basel University Hospital, Switzerland, successfully conducted a seminar on Obstetric Emergencies for doctors and midwives at the Edna Adan University Hospital.
This important training brought together healthcare professionals from across Somaliland, focusing on enhancing their ability to recognize, manage, and respond effectively to life-threatening complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.

Building Capacity for Critical Care
Obstetric emergencies remain one of the leading causes of maternal and newborn mortality in developing countries. Recognizing this, the seminar aimed to equip participants with practical, evidence-based skills to improve outcomes for mothers and babies. The sessions covered critical topics such as postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, obstructed labor, and neonatal resuscitation—conditions that require quick, coordinated, and skilled responses.
Through interactive lectures, hands-on simulations, and group discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of emergency management protocols and the importance of teamwork in high-pressure situations. The training also emphasized early detection and timely referral, ensuring that complications can be managed effectively before they become life-threatening.

Collaboration for a Healthier Future
This collaborative initiative reflects the shared vision of Edna Adan University, the Ministry of Health, and Basel University Hospital to strengthen Somaliland’s healthcare system through education and capacity building. By empowering frontline healthcare workers with advanced knowledge and practical skills, the program contributes directly to the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality rates in the region.
A Continuing Commitment
The success of this seminar underscores Edna Adan University’s ongoing commitment to improving healthcare education and delivery in Somaliland. With continued partnerships and knowledge exchange, the university remains at the forefront of efforts to build a skilled and confident health workforce capable of saving lives and transforming communities.
Together, these initiatives bring Somaliland closer to achieving safer motherhood and healthier futures for women and children across the nation.
